SUMMARY
The Athena Access is capable of transporting voice traffic over either a Frame Relay circuit or an IP-based network.
Depending upon your specific application needs, you may have a pre-existing IP-routed network that you would like to add
voice support to your remote offices.
The procedures listed below will guide you through this configuration process enabling the Athena Access to
transport voice over your IP-based network.
MORE INFORMATION
For the purposes of this configuration example, we have made several assumptions. These assumptions are presented in the diagram
below and the following section.
Assumptions
Node 1 will use the following parameters:
- Node ID - 1
- Region ID - 1
- Port 1 will be used as the exit trunk to the Frame Relay network
- IP Address - 198.198.198.1, Mask Size - 24
Node 2 will use the following parameters:
- Node ID - 2
- Region ID - 1
- Port 2 will be used as the exit trunk to the Frame Relay network
- IP Address - 199.199.199.1, Mask Size - 24
This information is explicitly assumed in the following procedures.
Please note that the steps related to the configuration of the software modules and specific port configurations have been
omitted from these procedures. For details regarding these specific steps, please consult the Athena Access Configuration Guide.
Node 1 Configuration
Base Node Configuration
This section configures the basic parameters of the node.
- From the Root Command Menu, set the Node ID by entering,
co nm ni 1 [ENTER]
- Set the Region ID by entering ri 1 [ENTER]
- Set the IP Address of the node by entering,
ip 198.198.198.1 [ENTER]
IP Router Configuration
This section creates a link to the remote unit for use by the IP router. It is established by creating a DLCI over
the Frame Relay trunk and associating it with the Router WAN Interface.
- Set the DLCI on the Frame Relay trunk for use by the Router WAN Interface.
- From Root Menu, proceed to the Frame Relay DLCI menu by entering,
co tr 1 dl then press [ENTER]
- Edit the DLCI for use by RWI by entering,
ed 16 ci 64000 de 1 1 1 rwi 100 [ENTER]
- The next step requires that a WAN Frame Relay Call Group to Node 2 is created. Proceed to the RWI FR command menu by entering
co lr wa fr [ENTER]
- Create a Frame Relay Call Group called "node2" by entering,
ed node2 [ENTER]
- Set the Call Group parameters as follows:
a. local dlci - 100
b. dest region id - 1
c. dest node id - 1
d. dest trunk - 1
e. dest dlci - 16
5. cir - 64000
Note: "dest" refers to the exit trunk that must be used to reach node 2 from this node (1).
- Now that the Frame Relay DLCI is configured, the next step involves the creation of the IP router link.
To create the link, proceed to the IP Link menu by entering,
co lr ip li [ENTER]
- Edit a new link by entering,
ed 1[ENTER]
- Set the IP Link parameters as follows:
a. connection type wan node2
b. ip type - unnumbered
c. peer address - 199.199.199.2
d. mask size - 24
This establishes an Unnumbered IP Link to its peer router (node 2).
Voice IP Call Group
- Create the Voice IP Call Group by entering, (from the Root Menu)
co vo ip cr[ENTER]
- Configure the Voice IP Call Group as follows:
a. name - voipnode2
b. remote Node ID - 199.199.199.2
c. Channels - voice over ip channels
This calling group associates the name "voipnode2" to the specific routed IP address of 199.199.199.2.
Voice IP Call Route
- Create a Voice over IP Route to Node 2 by entering,
co vo ro cr [ENTER]
- Configure the route as follows:
1. Called Address - {2*}
2. Calling Address - {*}
3. Transcalled Address - {d1}
4. Transcalling Address - {s1}
5. Route 1 - voipnode2
This states that any Called Address starting with the digit "2" will
now be routed to the node using the Ip Call Group named "voipnode2".
Local Voice Call Routing has not been included in this example.
Upon completion of the above configuration, Node 1 will be fully functional to route calls destined for Node 2 over
the IP routed link. Please note that the configuraton above does not configure the voice port parameters.
Node 2 Configuration
Base Node Configuration
This section configures the basic parameters of the node.
- From the Root Command Menu, set the Node ID by entering,
co nm ni 2 [ENTER]
- Set the Region ID by entering ri 1 [ENTER]
- Set the IP Address of the node by entering,
ip 199.199.199.2 [ENTER]
IP Router Configuration
This section creates a link to the remote unit for use by the IP router. It is established by creating a DLCI over
the Frame Relay trunk and associating it with the Router WAN Interface.
- Set the DLCI on the Frame Relay trunk for use by the Router WAN Interface.
- From Root Menu, proceed to the Frame Relay DLCI menu by entering,
co tr 2 dl then press [ENTER]
- Edit the DLCI for use by RWI by entering,
ed 16 ci 64000 de 1 2 2 rwi 200 [ENTER]
- The next step requires that a WAN Frame Relay Call Group to Node 2 is created. Proceed to the RWI FR command menu by entering
co lr wa fr [ENTER]
- Create a Frame Relay Call Group called "node1" by entering,
ed node1 [ENTER]
- Set the Call Group parameters as follows:
a. local dlci - 200
b. dest region id - 1
c. dest node id - 2
d. dest trunk - 2
e. dest dlci - 16
5. cir - 64000
Note: "dest" refers to the exit trunk that must be used to reach node 1 from this node (2).
- Now that the Frame Relay DLCI is configured, the next step involves the creation of the IP router link.
To create the link, proceed to the IP Link menu by entering,
co lr ip li [ENTER]
- Edit a new link by entering,
ed 1[ENTER]
- Set the IP Link parameters as follows:
a. connection type wan node2
b. ip type - unnumbered
c. peer address - 198.198.198.1
d. mask size - 24
This establishes an Unnumbered IP Link to its peer router (node 1).
Voice IP Call Group
- Create the Voice IP Call Group by entering, (from the Root Menu)
co vo ip cr[ENTER]
- Configure the Voice IP Call Group as follows:
a. name - voipnode1
b. remote Node ID - 198.198.198.1
c. Channels - voice over ip channels
This calling group associates the name "voipnode1" to the specific routed IP address of 198.198.198.1.
Voice IP Call Route
- Create a Voice over IP Route to Node 1 by entering,
co vo ro cr [ENTER]
- Configure the route as follows:
1. Called Address - {1*}
2. Calling Address - {*}
3. Transcalled Address - {d1}
4. Transcalling Address - {s1}
5. Route 1 - voipnode1
This states that any Called Address starting with the digit "1" will
now be routed to the node using the Ip Call Group named "voipnode1".
Local Voice Call Routing has not been included in this example.
Upon completion of the above configuration, Node 2 will be fully functional to route calls destined for Node 2 over
the IP routed link. Please note that the configuraton above does not configure the voice port parameters.
Considerations
The example above is given to show the basic steps required to support voice over IP in an Athena Access environment. You may
adapt these procedures to fit your specific application as necessary. For example, you may wish to use Numbered links in the IP
router configuration, or perhaps you would like to create more specific voice call routes. In any case, the process is similar in
all applications.
