Disable TFTP Access when not in Use

Article Number: T005
Article Type: Tip
Modified: January 22, 1999

SUMMARY

You may use TFTP on an Orbitor to retrieve and restore configuration dumps or upload new software. But realize that TFTP is an unsecure protocol and as such you should consider disabling access when you have completed these operations.

MORE INFORMATION

TFTP is a simple method to download configuration, restore configurations or upgrade software. However, in its simplicity, it also is a potential security risk since it is generally uncontrolled.

To eliminate this security risk, you should disable TFTP access through the Access Set-up menu of the Orbitor. Once disabled, no unauthorized access will be granted.

The next time you need to perform any function with TFTP, first telnet to the Orbitor and re-enable TFTP Access, perform your operations, and then remember to disable it again.
