Use the ICMP Redirect Statistic to Improve Routing Efficiency

Article Number: T011
Article Type: Tip
Modified: December 1, 1999

SUMMARY

If you have more than one router installed in your network, you know that the performance of your network can be impacted by workstations, servers or the routers themselves if they contain improper routing entries. This article provides a tip on how to detect if the devices on your network contain less than efficient routes.

MORE INFORMATION

The Orbitor product family provide an excellent suite of LAN and WAN statistics that you can use to monitor the performance of your network. One such statistic is "ICMP Redirects Sent". This statistic is located in the LAN STATISTICS->IP Traffic Summary Display and presents the total, average rate and highest rate statistics for this metric.

If your router shows that it is sending ICMP Redirects, you can be sure that one of your devices on the LAN is not configured to use the best route for a given network destination. Since a router is designed to "redirect" the traffic as well as sending the redirect notification, the application will normally work quite well. However, this is at the price of performance.

By tracking down the device that is improperly configured, you will improve the performance of the routed network by eliminating the extra processing involved in handling routed traffic.
